Does the machine require ice for cooling?
No. The VascuTherm3 does not require ice for its cooling therapy. The device runs on a 90% water 10% alcohol solution which will be provided with your delivery. All you have to do is fill the reservoir with the solution and it does not have to be emptied until your treatment period is over (the solution can remain in the device for up to 2 months before needing to be replaced). This allows for uninterrupted therapy.

What is the benefit of precise temperature control, why not use ice?
When dealing with ice there are complications that arise. One being that the patient is required to interrupt his/her therapy in order to refill the machine and the second being the risk of thermal tissue damage. With precise temperature control, the VascuTherm3 cools or heats the area at a comfortable yet therapeutic temperature substantially increasing the number of consecutive treatment hours and eliminating the risk of thermal tissue damage.

What is DVT therapy and why is it important?
First it is important to understand what DVT is: Deep venous thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a vein that is deep inside the body.
Causes
Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) mainly affects the large veins in the lower leg and thigh. The clot can block blood flow. If the clot breaks off and moves through the bloodstream, it can get stuck in the brain, lungs, heart, or other area, leading to severe damage.
Risks for DVT include:
  • Bedrest
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Fractures
  • Giving birth within the last 6 months
  • Medications such as estrogen and birth control pills
  • Obesity
  • Recent surgery (especially hip, knee, or female reproductive organ surgery)
  • Sitting for a long time, such as on a long plane or car trip
The VascuTherm3 offers DVT therapy. A cuff is placed around the foot, calf, or both and the device applies light pressure to these areas forcing blood through the joint reducing/eliminating the formation of blood clots post operation.

How does the VascuTherm3 manage pain if I am not taking any pain medicine?
The VascuTherm3 can cycle through its thermal therapy providing the patient with 20 minutes of cold therapy followed by 10 minutes of hot therapy. When the skin is exposed to this type of thermal therapy for more than 2 cycles, the pain receptors in the area become confused by the temperature changes and 'turn off'. In essence, the pain receptors do not communicate with the brain and less pain is felt. This reduces the need for pain medication that can often be addictive or compromise functioning.

What is the benefit of compression?
  • Improved pain control through the increased proprioception.
  • Reduction of edema
  • Provides occlusive environment
    • Considered standard treatment of leg ulcers
    • Prevents tissue dehydration and cell death
    • Provides barrier to bacteria
  • Facilitates early mobilization
  • Decreases risk of infection
The VascuTherm3 can provide compression while thermal therapy is occurring reducing edema and increasing range of motion post operation.

What is edema?
Edema is a medical term referring to 'swelling'. Although swelling is quite common post operation it can also occur under other circumstances.

Does the VascuTherm3 require gravity to work properly?
No. It is not necessary to place the device higher than the area you are treating. The device is CPU controlled allowing the patient to place the unit anywhere they would like during treatment.
